Exhibit A: the problem

Michigan in February

We love it here. We also love seeing the sun. These two facts conflict every February.

Ann Arbor34°
  • Typical February high, on a good day
  • Main activity: scraping the windshield
  • Kids’ outdoor time: 4 minutes, then a snowsuit argument
  • Water sports: none, it’s solid
VS
Akumal, Mexico82°
  • Average February high; lows around 68°F
  • Main activity: choosing which cave to swim in
  • Sea about 78°F, cenotes 77–81°F all year
  • Dry season. Sunscreen is the only forecast

Mexico data: Cancun Trip Insider February averages. Michigan data: lived experience.

“But what about…”

Is it safe?

The State Department rates Quintana Roo Level 2, “exercise increased caution.” We’ll be in a beach town with kids in bed by 8. Normal resort-town sense applies.

What about the toddler?

Most parks are free under 5, cenotes have shallow ends, ruins have stroller paths. A couple of things are 4+ or 5+, and there are plenty of adults to tag-team.

Seaweed?

February is usually clear, though early 2026 ran heavier than normal. We’ll check the tracker. Cenotes never get seaweed. That’s kind of their whole thing.

Do the kids need passports?

Yes, every one. Start now; kids’ passports take weeks. Consider it a pre-trip craft project.

Is it a long trip?

About 4 hours nonstop on Delta, then 90 minutes by van. Same time zone in February, so no jet lag.

Do I have to plan anything?

No. You have to say yes, pack a swimsuit, and decide how many tacos is too many. (There’s no wrong answer.)
